"Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." - Romans 5:1
The state of an unsaved man is indeed pathetic. We were all once like an unclean thing, and all our righteousness like filthy rage. As per God's holy standard, we all fall short of His glory. But God in His rich mercy took us from our unclean state and He cleansed us and clothed us with His Son's righteousness. Those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ are justified by faith, and we have peace with God. We stand justified before God because He saved us. Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and God will give you the righteousness of His Son.
