Yesterday, President Mahmoud Abbas announced Hamas and Fatah had agreed on the posts for a new Palestinian unity government, which is expected to take shape in the coming days. There have been divisions in Israel on whether the nation should accept the new unity government. Some Israeli MKs urged the international community to reject it, on the basis that it falls short of the three principles demanded by the Quartet (EU, US, UN, Russia). In fact Prime Minister Ismael Haniyeh recently stated that Hamas is still working towards the goal of the destruction of Israel. But the Palestinian Authority has received word from President Jacques Chirac that the French will be supporting the new government.

Quote: "However, France intends to support the new Palestinian government and will cooperate with it, according to PA foreign minister-designate Ziad Abu Amar. Abu Amar said French Foreign Minister Phillipe Douste-Blazy invited him to a meeting in Paris and informed him that he hoped "a new page in the relations between the Hamas government and the international community" could begin.

Yikes! Douste-Blazy famously stated last year that Iran was a "great country" that was playing a stabilizing role in the Middle East. Abbas is expected to formally announce the formation of a unity government tomorrow, and I perceive that if Hamas-Fatah relations keep up, the deal will receive a mixed response from the international community. The West won't reject it outright because the Arabs and especially Saudi Arabia will be backing it. Nations like Russia, France and other pro-Palestinian countries, will accept it and press for the resumption of aid to the cash-strapped terror-government. The biggest winners in all this will be Hamas. They have successfully divided the international community without forfeiting any of their ideologies.
