| Following yesterdays news about Palestinian efforts to form a national unity government by the end of November, along with EU and British politicians making a concerted push for a regional peace agreement in the coming weeks, Prime Minister Blair is expected today to call for pressure to be put on Iran and Syria to make positive contributions to peace in the region. Tony Blair recently stated that he believed Syrian involvement could be a key to achieving peace, due to the Hamas leadership being based in Damascus, and Syrian support for Hizbullah and other terrorist organizations operating in the Middle East. Quote: "A broad strategy for the region must include bringing peace to Palestine and Lebanon, Blair will say. Blair has made Middle East peace a key goal of his last months in office. He is expected to step down by mid-2007. The strategy would make clear "to Syria and Iran the basis on which they can help the peaceful development of the Middle East rather than hinder it, and the consequences of not doing so," the spokeswoman added. I think it was Blair who also recently stated that achieving peace between Israel and the Palestinians would have a knock-on effect on problems in the rest of the region.
