Israeli newspaper Haaretz is reporting that the Palestinian Authority may be planning to announce a unilateral declaration of independence in an effort to undermine Israeli sovereignty in Jerusalem and pre-empt a 'solution' for the stalled Middle East peace process. The revelation follow statements made in the press by President Mahmoud Abbas threatening to dissolve the Palestinian Authority if Israel's 'settlement expansion' in east Jerusalem is not brought to an end. A couple of months ago, PA Prime Minister Salem Fayyad published plans for the establishment of state institutions within two years, which were intended to force Israel to recognize the 'reality' of a Palestinian state despite the failed negotiations on borders. But no mention was made of Fayyad's proposals for a Palestinian declaration of independence and the submission of a claim of sovereignty to the United Nations over lands captured by Israel during the Six Day War. Given the change in American policy, that all of east Jerusalem is illegally occupied territory and settlement construction must cease, officials in the Israeli government are now concerned that such a claim could find broad support in the UN. Fayyad has already received positive responses to the plan from European states, and no opposition was reported to have come from the Obama administration.

Quote: "The plan specifies that at the end of a designated period for bolstering national institutions the PA, in conjunction with the Arab League, would file a "claim of sovereignty" to the UN Security Council and General Assembly over the borders of June 4, 1967 (before the outbreak of the Six-Day War, during which Israel took control of the West Bank and Gaza). Fayyad is also seeking a new Security Council resolution to replace Resolutions 242 and 338 in the hope of winning the international community's support for the borders of a Palestinian state and applying stronger pressure on Israel to withdraw from the West Bank.

Since they can't get what they want in the negotiations with Israel, they are now turning to the international community in order to force Israel's hand. That's what this amounts to. It's hard to believe that in past negotiations, the PA has been offered up to 98% of Judea and Samaria for the creation of a Palestinian state, and an exchange of territory for the land that would remain under Israeli sovereignty. But rather than making peace with the Israelis, the PA has repeatedly rejected such offers, claiming they do not go far enough. The issues of east Jerusalem and a right of return for millions of refugees to Israel proper are continually cited as obstacles to Middle East peace. In reality it is Fatah and Hamas' refusal to recognize Jewish sovereignty anywhere in the Middle East that is the obstacle to peace, and for them this sham peace process is simply a stepping stone towards their goal of the ultimate destruction of Israel. Of course that is just what is happening in the world that we see. Behind the scenes, a spiritual battle is being fought over the land of Israel and the city of Jerusalem. Satan knows he can't destroy the Jewish people. He tried that during the Second World War. He has tried to destroy the reborn Jewish state on numerous occasions, but God has miraculously defended His people, though they were often outnumbered on the battlefield 100 to 1. Now Satan knows he can't destroy Israel, but he is trying to gain control of east Jerusalem and the Temple Mount, to which the promised Messiah is to return and reign from. And that is why the Palestinians want nothing less than everything that was liberated during the Six Day War. And that is why this conflict will not be solved by human efforts. It will continue to fester until Daniel's 70th week begins. And then the battle of Armageddon will commence. That time may be drawing near. Are you prepared to meet God? Is it well with your soul? Do not wait until it is too late. Trust in Jesus Christ for salvation today.

Mark 8:36-37
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
